Course aim

This course aims to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of key legal requirements and issues for a Building Surveyor when working on the development process, covering both development approval and construction phases, and of the operational measures for the mitigation and resolution of problems on them. This equips students with lifelong learning skills to keep up to date with developments in development and construction laws, with a particular focus on the former.

Course content

The course focuses on legal requirements of the roles and obligations of building surveyors in the development process. It also examines the legal issues and preventive/remedial measures in the professional practice of building surveyors. Statutory interpretation; risk management and professional indemnity insurance; consultancy contracts and standard forms of building contract; and dispute resolution methods.
