The aim of this course is to ensure that students fully understand the engineering of fire when designing and constructing buildings.
The course will cover the causes of fire; the products and hazards of fire; the chemistry of fire; what can be predicted about fire behaviour from computer software packages; fire induced behaviour of various construction materials; fire load; fire resistance levels; fire resistance and material properties tests; means of escape; passive fire protection measures including compartmentation, separation and envelope protection; active fire protection meausures including fire extinguishers (their selection and use), fire hydrant systems; sprinkler systems, fire and smoke detection and alarm systems and smoke control systems; the fire engineering and alternative solution process; and upgrading of existing buildings.
