To develop and apply knowledge of the aetiology, diagnosis, classification, assessment, description and treatment of psychological disorders, alongside the development of basic clinical skills for observing, assessing, communicating and intervening with clients.
Students will develop knowledge of the principles of psychotherapy and basic counselling skills, including interviewing skills, micro skills, and ethical considerations (informed consent and confidentiality). Students will build knowledge of the assessment, diagnosis (using current major diagnostic classification systems), and aetiology (including psychological models) of psychological problems across the spectrum of severity and the adult age range. Students develop skills and knowledge based on a scientist-practitioner model emphasising the use of evidence-based skills and interventions.
