Course aim

To enable preservice teachers to develop awareness of the social and community contexts of early childhood settings for infants and toddlers, the roles of teachers, and the links between childcare settings and other agencies in providing for children’s learning and welfare.

Course content

Preservice teachers will undertake a supervised placement and study the social, economic and political contexts of child care service provision. Preservice teachers will investigate community and interagency links, the teacher's role in child care education, the organisational and legal requirements, policies and practice, and the centrality of relationships in learning and teaching. The preservice teachers will reflect on the learning environments for infants and toddlers, child protection and wellbeing issues and teaching individuals and small groups. The preservice teachers will also reflect on self as learners, and through observation and data analysis, report on own professional practice in the child care setting.
