Course aim

To develop students' capacity to critically evaluate theories of children's social and emotional development.

Course content

Students will look at development by concentrating on key developmental ‘domains’ – specifically children's social and emotional development. Students will gain an understanding that emotional development underpins all other areas, including social, language and cognitive development and is closely linked to significant aspects of physical development. Students will apply observational techniques to analyse a child’s (aged 2-5 years) social and emotional development, with a specific focus on attachment, self-concept and self-esteem, gender-role and identity, social competence, and peer relations. Students will also explore how educators can support children to develop social and emotional competence and nurture their personal growth, specifically through assisting children to develop self-regulation and resilience. Students will explore contemporary issues in a range of contexts and considers how these may support or hinder development.
