Course aim

To provide students with a foundational understanding of midwifery as primary healthcare and the implications of this practice in order to optimise healthy outcomes for mothers and their babies.

Course content

Midwifery as primary health; social determinants of health; National core maternity indicators; cultural safety; continuity of care; mental health; women’s health; sexual health; reproductive health; contraception; fertility and invitro-fertilisation; nutritional needs of the mother in the perinatal period; nutritional needs of the newborn; health promotion; Baby Friendly Health Initiative; breastfeeding promotion; immunisation; safe sleeping; smoking cessation; domestic violence; teenage pregnancy; self-determination and informed choice; equity; individual and group rights; advocacy; cultural diversity and new parenthood; grief; health education and literacy; antenatal education; antenatal classes; postnatal education; postnatal classes; community support.
