To introduce students as pre-service teachers to the concept of numeracy, its relationship with mathematics, its role in the contemporary curriculum and how numeracy is part of everyday life.
The students will develop perspectives of numeracy that underpin the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum including numeracy’s relationship with mathematics, thinking mathematically, cross curricula perspectives and the functional, socio-historical, technological and critical dimensions of numeracy. The students will also develop understanding of the role and impact of mathematics in pre-service educators’ personal, professional and civic lives through authentic contexts that involve data handling and financial mathematics and from contexts drawn from other learning areas. Students will explore the concepts of attribute, quantity, data and shape of data. Students will learn to think mathematically through comparing, sorting, classifying, representing and communicating.
