Course aim

To prepare students as pre-service educators to plan, resource, teach and evaluate well sequenced mathematics learning experiences and topics as part of a longer term program.

Course content

Students will extend their own abilities to think mathematically and their knowledge of Mathematics Education from Birth to Eight years of age or Reception to Year 7 according to their specialisation. The focus in this course is on practices which support learning mathematics based on play and social constructivist perspectives, conceptual understanding and language development. In particular Mathematics Education 2 builds upon Mathematics Education 1 re planning and assessment for learning through the number and place value, pattern and algebra, fractions and decimals, and money and financial mathematics content areas and the proficiencies of problem solving, reasoning and communicating mathematically. The Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics frame the planning for learning and assessment for/of learning needed during Professional Experience 3.
