Course aim

To engage preservice teachers with theoretical perspectives on emergent literacy and reading development. To build foundational knowledge and skills in reading instruction and to support learners with reading difficulties.

Course content

This course takes preservice teachers from the early years through the primary years, inclusive of reading development at each stage. The early years component covers family literacy, emergent literacy and beginning reading. Preservice teachers will be introduced to instructional strategies for teaching phonics, promoting fluency, and supporting comprehension in the beginning and later stages of reading. Strategies for reading different text types including narrative, nonfiction and digital texts will be included. The course also covers approaches to culturally responsive reading pedagogy, supporting children with reading challenges, and the assessment of reading.
