To introduce the concepts of landuse planning and sustainability and understand what these mean for future rural and urban landscapes.
Land use classification and land capability. Land use systems: cropping, horticulture, forestry, grazing, intensive livestock, aquaculture, indigenous lands, mining and park reserves. Land degradation and contamination issues. Urban land use: commercial, retail, industrial and housing. Rationale for land use planning Principles and concepts of land use planning. Sustainability concepts: implications for rural landscape and cities. Climate change and its implications for land use and land use planning.
