Course aim

To develop in-depth understanding of advanced structural principles of stability, strength and serviceability in structural design. To develop and extend students’ analysis and design skills in hot-rolled steel and cold-formed steel structures. To introduce students to computer packages commonly used in steel structural design.

Course content

Advanced steel material properties: fracture and crack development, fatigue failure; Steel members subjected to complex loadings; Design of steel beams and columns: flexural buckling, lateral buckling, supporter design, lattice columns.
Plate theory: local buckling, post-buckling, collapse, effective width; Behaviour of thin-walled open sections: bending, shear, torsion, warping, bi-moment, lateral, torsional, flexural and torsional buckling; Design of thin-walled sections: beams, columns and frames.
Use of design codes of practice.
