Course aim

To continue to develop students’ in-depth understanding of structural principles in reinforced concrete structures and pre-stressed concrete structures. To develop students’ skills of analysis and design in modern concrete structures. To introduce students to computer packages commonly used in concrete structural design.

Course content

Review of the design philosophy of reinforced concrete and reliability design, and introduction to more advanced aspects of reinforced concrete design including: Design for flexural, shear and Torsion. Bond-slip effect, Cracking and crack control. Strut and tie modelling. Plastic design of concrete frames.

Overview of prestressed concrete development. Design properties of materials. Ultimate flexural strength, design for shear and torsional strength. Design of prestressed continuous beams, statically indeterminate frames. Design of one-way and two-way slabs. Construction technology for prestressed concrete.
