Course aim

Enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise necessary to undertake a community needs assessment and plan a substantial collaborative project with a community agency.

Course content

Philosophical and theoretical basis for collaborative and participatory community practice. Processes and strategies relevant to community need assessment. Liaison with community based agencies to undertake project scoping and community needs assessment. Project management skills. Proposal writing. Ethical issues and dilemmas in community work.

The community participatory practice projects that students carry out in this course required a high level of professional practice, self-management, communication, implementation and evaluation skills and are a step up form their previous field practice experience. Students need to display competence in these skills in their precursor field practice placements to ensure safe and effective practice for this placement.
