Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop students understanding of current occupational therapy practice settings and develop skills in occupational performance analysis.

Course content

Introduction to occupational therapy practice including the occupational performance process model, impact of physical interpersonal and cultural dimensions of environment on occupational performance and therapeutic use of self. Introduction and practice in occupational analysis focusing on observation and reporting skills. Frameworks and models including International Classification of Function, Person-Environment-Occupation Framework (PEO), Occupational Performance Model.

Introduce students to the culture of the Australian Health Care system and contemporary health care service models. Role of multi-disciplinary health team and responsibility of team members. Provision of occupational therapy services in hospital settings. Exploration of the occupational impact of a range of conditions commonly seen in a hospital setting. Occupational therapy assessment and intervention skills associated with these conditions including clinical reasoning, initial assessments, discharge planning, home assessment, goal setting and report writing. Safe and ethical practice in hospital settings.
