Course aim

To provide students with an appreciation of the theory and practice of assessing sustainable development.

Course content

This course provides an overview of the key arguments in the debate over how to assess sustainability in the natural and built environment. Students will gain the depth of knowledge required to grasp the complexity of models and tools that are used to assess sustainable development. The latter part of the course will introduce students to integrated sustainability decision making and assessment in the natural and built environment. Students will be introduced to multi-criteria assessment, futures planning, sustainability indicators, criteria and goal oriented approaches, vulnerability assessment and risk evaluation. Students will gain the knowledge and skills required to work in the field of sustainability assessment.
