Course aim

This course introduces the student to the theory of differential and integral calculus of real valued functions of more than one real variable, including an introduction to linear partial differential equations. The theoretical development is supported by examples and applications from the physical world.

Course content

Functions of more than one real variable; level sets; limits and continuity;
Differential calculus: partial derivatives and differentiability; chain rule; directional derivatives and the gradient; the implicit function theorem; Taylor and Maclaurin series; extreme values and the quadratic form; optimisation with constraints;
Introduction to linear partial differential equations; elementary boundary value problems and solution by separation of variables. Applications.
Integral calculus: double and triple integrals; iterated integrals; change of variables in multiple integrals; the Jacobian; improper integrals.
