Course aim

To introduce students to thinking about engineering projects and products from a holistic perspective.

Course content

Understanding systems, hard and soft systems; the human element in systems, design, predictability, social aspects, decisions; Unified Systems Hypothesis; Generic Reference Model, function, form, behaviour; efficiency, effectiveness, worth; process and structure models; systems architecture, issues, conceiving systems, methodology, classical systems engineering, problems with classical systems engineering, a new systems engineering method, building future systems, introduction to the structure of ISO 15288.  Methods to evaluate engineering proposals from a whole of system perspective.
