To develop in-depth understanding of dynamic behaviour and design of structures subject to earthquakes. To develop student’s analysis and design skills in masonry structures. To introduce students to computer packages commonly used in earthquake analysis.
Design of reinforced and unreinforced masonry structures for compression, bending and combined actions.
Nature and origin of earthquake activity and its consequences on structures. Seismic design and assessment of structures. Concepts of ductility. Design of structures for earthquakes through selection of appropriate load carrying systems, member design and structural detailing, applied to steel, reinforced concrete and masonry structures.
Assessment of seismic capacity of existing structures including identification of vulnerable components. Methods and techniques of seismic retrofitting for vulnerable structures.
Use of relevant design codes of practice in earthquake loads and masonry structures.
