To develop students' understanding of the principles of population health and epidemiology within a global and national context.
What is epidemiology; what is population health; population health principles and application; what are desired and attainable health outcomes; define disease aetiology and apply it to disease control; key sources of health data; risk factors; measures of disease occurrence; association between lifestyle risk factors (nutrition, obesity, injury prevention and control, sexual health) and health outcomes; screening; randomised control trials; observational studies; choosing an appropriate research design; cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies; calculation of risk.
