Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop students' understanding of the principles of population health and epidemiology within a global and national context.

Course content

What is epidemiology; what is population health; population health; principles and application; what are desired and attainable health outcomes; define aetiology and apply it to disease control; key sources of health data, risk factors; measures of disease occurrence; association between lifestyle risk factors and health outcomes (nutrition, obesity, injury prevention and control, sexual health); screening, randomised control trials; observational studies; choosing an appropriate research design; cohort studies, case control studies, cross sectional studies; calculation or risk.
