To develop skills in computer program development using the C programming language and to introduce students to operating system theory.
Programming in C: functions (pass by value and reference), arrays (1D and 2D), pointers, strings (c-style strings using pointers), file input/output, structures, array of structures, dynamic memory allocation, memory management, multi-file programs. Microcontroller programming in C. Introduction to C++.
Operating system fundamentals, process protection, and inter-process communication. Multi-tasking, threads, and scheduling algorithms. Unix overview, shell scripting, current OS comparison, and software security. Concurrency, locking, semaphores, monitors, and SMP systems. Virtual memory, swap space, and paging algorithms. Rotating disk media, physical and logical access, RAID, and journaling. Protection and security.
