Course aim

To introduce students to the context of tertiary learning and develop a range of academic reading, writing and basic research skills as a basis for future university study.

Course content

  • Organisation of resources and time: course information booklets, course homepages, discussion boards, university policies, university services, teacher-student communication, note-taking.
  • Topic/question analysis and research planning via ‘concept maps’
  • Finding, evaluating and managing resources: library catalogue, electronic databases, web-based sources. 
  • Reading for meaning, method, argument and validity in a range of disciplines.
  • Research based writing and academic convention.
  • Understanding different assessment methods and intent in a university setting.
