To introduce students to the principles and uses of key electromechanical components of mechatronic systems.
Introduction to electromechanical sensors, motors and actuators and the process of designing mechatronic systems.
Switching devices: mechanical and electrical switches, relays, solenoids, voice coils and transistors.
Experimental measurements and statistics: concepts such as accuracy, precision, resolution, reproducibility and sensitivity. The distinction between practical and statistically significant differences.
Data acquisition and practical implementations of analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion.
Introduction to the frequency domain: aliasing, construction of complex signals from sinusoids and filtering.
Introduction to sensors and transducers: measurement variables including displacement, velocity, force, sound, light and temperature. Uses, models and limitations of sensors.
Heat exchange and modelling.
Introduction to motors: performance characteristics. Selection of appropriate motors for tasks. Types and applications of linear motors. Special motors including servo , permanent magnet , variable reluctance and stepper motors. Motor control.
Pneumatics: components and design of simple electro-pneumatic circuits. Differences between electrical and pneumatic actuation.
Fluids and fluidics: principles behind fluid qualities, fluidic logic and the comparison between mechanical, electrical and fluidic implementations of logic functions.
Computer-sensor interfaces: uses and applications data acquisition,interfacing to physical devices and implementing simple feedback control loops between sensors and actuators.
