Course aim

To provide students with a more advanced understanding of the forces influencing the development of cities and regions.

Course content

The geographic, economic, and political context of urban and regional development; the determinants of land use, city size, and urban growth; and national and international economic changes and their affect on the spatial distribution of urban form. The roles and impacts of market failures, land use regulations, growth management, and urban containment policies on housing markets, open space and natural amenities, and development patterns. The interplay between public and private sectors in the provision and redevelopment of housing in cities and regions.
