Course aim

To provide the student with:

  • An appreciation of the value of surface engineering in advanced manufacturing economies 
  • An appreciation of the range of surface properties that can be engineered
  • An appreciation of the range of coatings that can be deposited 
  • A knowledge of the different technologies used in surface engineering/coating deposition

Course content

Surface modifications at different scales: nm, microns and mm

  • Material processing and the effect on surfaces
  • Physical vapour Deposition
  • Sputter deposition
  • Chemical Vapour Deposition
  • Sol-gel technologies
  • Plasma and Ion implantation technologies
  • Lithographic methods and soft materials
  • Non lithographic methods for localised surface treatment / deposition (microplasmas) 
  • Device fabrication – microfabrication technologies for ICs and lab-on-a-chip
  • Scratch resistant coatings for ophthalmic applications
  • Development of the Plastic Mirror
  • Failure modes
  • Scratch test 
  • Modulus matching (egg shell effects)
