Course aim

To examine the interplay of population mobility, citizenship and constructions of identity in national and transnational contexts.

Course content

Political, economic and cultural dimensions of globalisation; patterns of internal and transnational mobility; voluntary and involuntary migration (sojourners, guest workers, immigrant settlers, short term and long term refugees); citizenship and the politics of belonging; policies of incorporation of voluntary and involuntary migrants in a range of settler countries; human rights and international governance of migration; adaptation of voluntary and involuntary migrants to new cultural contexts; the construction and negotiation of cultural and social identities.
