Course aim

To develop students' understanding of form, aesthetics as well as human factors and ergonomics as considerations in product design. To build on students' skills in researching, developing and evaluating design for usability and product aesthetics. The course will introduce students to the cultural factors in the development of product appearance.

Course content

The students will develop basic knowledge of human factors including anthropometry, the physical abilities and constraints of the human body and senses and principles of usability including physical and cognitive factors.

They will be introduced to knowledge, research methods and design methods to develop products to fit human capabilities. Students will also be introduced to the concepts of branding and visual languages of design, and how product appearance conveys cultural meaning and communicates use. Students will develop skills in design simulation, development and communication via text, oral presentations, three-dimensional model making, drawing and graphic presentations.
