Course aim

To augment practical knowledge by introducing students to the more intangible and theoretical criteria of aesthetics, social sustainability, cultural and personal identity and symbolic meaning that will add value to their design outcomes beyond the more pragmatic considerations.

Course content

The students will extend their knowledge on product innovation by investigating ways of designing, assessing and discussing products that reflect the intangible and theoretical criteria of aesthetics, social sustainability, cultural and personal identity, and symbolic meaning with the goal of inspiring visionary artefacts that support the values of our diverse populations as embodied in our material culture. The outcomes will be research dissemination in image and text within a journal, one three dimensional modelling exercise as a project to apply the theoretical knowledge, and one essay/creative writing exercise that explores a theme within the course content.
