To raise student awareness of self and community reproductive health and disease by providing an in depth and updated knowledge of reproductive and developmental physiology and to foster critical thinking and appraisal of cutting edge research in the field.
The oocyte and embryo: Genetic sex determination; Differentiation of two sexes; Fertilization; epigenetics; genetic imprinting; implantation and establishment of placenta;
Maternal Response to conception: maternal recognition and support of pregnancy (hormonal and immunity).
Infertility and Ageing: Causes of male and female infertility; assisted reproductive technologies and cloning; hormonal contraception; menopause and male ageing.
Fetal growth and well-being: Fetal metabolism; Development and maturation of fetal systems – Cardiovascular system; Respiratory system; Gastrointestinal system; Renal system; Nervous system.
Maternal health during pregnancy: Maternal obesity; gestational diabetes; drug use and abuse.
Parturition: Control of labour; birth and its pathologies.
