The aim of this course is to enable students to consolidate their nursing practice to the level of a beginning registered nurse in the Australian health care system through a period of extended field experience in a relevant clinical practice setting and to demonstrate the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council competency standards for the Registered Nurse.
This eight week supernumerary practicum placement focuses on students' demonstration of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse. Students apply theory studied in the program to the practice setting including: planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive nursing care for clients of varying acuity and complexity; clinical reasoning and decision making; client rights and autonomy; mentoring preceptorship, delegation and supervision, professional communication; ANMC codes of ethics and conduct; ANMC competency standards, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia professional standards, guidelines and tools, and mandatory reporting; reflective practice and lifelong learning. Students are required to demonstrate mastery in manual handling, CPR and medication calculations in a pre-placement workshop.
