Course aim

To develop specialised evidence based clinical knowledge of pathology and mastery of skills of assessment, analysis of findings, planning, intervention and evaluation required for client centred rehabilitation physiotherapy practice

Course content

Students will learn how to apply the clinical knowledge and skills required for rehabilitation physiotherapy practice
with adults. Students will learn the causes and mechanisms of abnormal movement, the pathophysiology and
sequelae of a wide range of congenital, chronic and degenerative conditions requiring rehabilitation including:
neuromuscular diseases (e.g. intellectual disability, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head injury,
spinal cord injury, peripheral neuropathy) orthopaedic conditions (amputation, arthritis) and cardiorespiratory
conditions (pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation).

Students will develop the physiotherapy of skills of assessment, application of outcome measures, analysis of findings, planning, intervention and evaluation relevant to these conditions; physiotherapy intervention e.g. exercise, application of principles of motor learning, programming for a variety of settings (including home and work), functional mobility, postural control, gait, use of orthoses, mobility aids and other assistive devices, equipment and technology, electrotherapy, client education. Students will integrate culturally responsive care and
management of social and emotional issues relating to disability, issues related to the older client and carer,
occupational health and safety issues especially manual handling, interprofessional practice in rehabilitation and
modes of service delivery, interprofessional practice, discharge planning, accessing ongoing community support
for client's self-management, role of advocacy.
