Course aim

The aim of this course is to apply the principles of evidence based practice in interpreting health science literature.

Course content

The course will cover the development of evidence based question formats [Population Intervention Comparison Outcomes (PICO)], how to establish systematic search strategies; selection of appropriate databases and limitations to the search. Students will be introduced to a variety of appraisal tools and practice application of these tools, qualitative and quantitative research (eg. descriptive techniques, concepts of probability, variance and error, tests for determining differences and associations, calculation of effect sizes, odds ratios and number needed to treat), presentation, interpretation of data, implications of findings, communication of finding.
