Course aim

To provide postgraduate engineering students with fundamental concepts of sustainability and sustainable development issues in engineering practices, to introduce students techniques for modelling resource flows in the life cycle of a product/system and cost-benefit analysis, and to prepare them with knowledge and skills to identify, assess, manage and improve the whole-of-life economic and environmental performance of products and services.

Course content

The content of this course covers the topics of sustainability in product and service development, eco-efficiency, resource efficiency, life-cycle processes and modelling, input-output analysis, life-cycle environmental assessment, value chains, life-cycle costs, activity-based costing, risks and uncertainties, decision making tools, and product life-cycle management strategies and cases.
