Course aim

The aim of this course is to enable students to develop an in-depth understanding of a range of conceptual models of nursing and their application within the socio-political and cultural context of contemporary nursing practice in the paediatric and child health context; and to develop positive attributes and attitudes to work whilst building clinical nursing confidence and defining their professional responsibilities and boundaries.

Course content

Principles underpinning the effective communication and provision of care for infants, children, young people and their families within the health care environment through the exploration of family-centred care; complex family dynamics; health promotion and education and the application of frameworks to support ethical and legal practice, including the role of Registered Nurses in keeping children safe. Use of critical reflection and a Professional Portfolio to explore professional boundaries; manage stress; manage time; develop effective communication with infants, children, young people and their families with complex needs; and to develop a beginning understanding of Competencies for the specialist Paediatric and Child Health Nurse (ACPCHN 2006).
