Course aim

The course aims to provide students with an elementary understanding of the relationship between the law and business decision making and operations. Associated ethical considerations affecting business decision making and operations are also examined.

Course content

Topics will be drawn from the following: 

  • Introduction to the Australian legal system and functions of law in the business environment; 
  • Dispute resolution outside of the courts 
  • Business ethics in relation to legal problems; 
  • The development of legal problem-solving skills; 
  • Legal considerations when choosing a business vehicle; 
  • Forming and interpreting business contracts; 
  • Other aspects of the law of contract including agreement and the concepts of good faith and unconscionability; 
  • Legal risk management including potential remedies for breach of contractual obligations; 
  • Marketing of good and services including product safety and consumer protection law, misleading and deceptive conduct and other Trade Practices Act considerations; 
  • The law of agency 
  • Liability for negligence; 
  • Dealing with financial difficulty.
