Course aim

This unit aims to extend your knowledge of research and development management by undertaking a problem-solving project related to an authentic research management situation. It provides an opportunity for you to complete an independent study in a problem of interest to you in the area of research management.

Course content

The Research & Development Management Project can include any topic within the overall boundaries of the program as it is structured around a learning agreement between a student and a project supervisor.
As part of the agreement students may utilise additional expertise and resources from their employing organisation of the university in which they are enrolled.
It is anticipated that most projects will be focused on a problem or issue in the work context of the student and that the student will deliver outcomes to their own organisation as well as an assessable report. However, students who do not have such a work context may choose to undertake it in another setting. In these circumstances they are required to find a sponsor within that setting who is prepared to act as a de facto client for the project.
The main components of the agreement are:
Aims and objectives: what will the project seek to do?
Program of activities: the learning and investigative activities in which the student will engage
Outcomes: what will be produced and in what form will it be delivered
Judgement: in what terms – criteria and standards – will it be assessed? Who will be expected to comment on it?
