Course aim

To explore the applications of plane surveying to engineering, mining and hydrographic surveying.

Course content

Horizontal, vertical and transition curves for road engineering. Geometrical design criteria for roads.
Construction surveying principles, building sites, plans. Control establishment, maintenance and transfer. As-built and movement monitoring surveys.
Mine surveying, the mining environment, legislative requirements. Survey control and transfer (surface/underground). Subsidence monitoring. tunnelling, underground setout and mapping. Volume determinations.
Introduction to offshore and hydrographic surveying, tides, datums, charts. Law of the sea. Sea floor mapping techniques.
