Course aim

To consolidate and extend preservice teachers' knowledge, skills and professional expertise associated with teaching and learning in the area of child and community studies in a secondary school setting.

Course content

Preservice teachers will have opportunities to develop the necessary skills, knowledge, attitudes and professional expertise to teach both theoretical and practical components of child studies in a senior school context. They will practice how to apply this knowledge in the context of the relevant SACE curriculum when designing, planning and developing current teaching pedagogies and resources. Preservice teachers will learn how to plan lesson sequences drawing on contemporary child development concepts and with links to community resources. The course explores the societal influences including socio- economic, cultural and spiritual beliefs on child development and child rearing practices with a focus on the implications for teaching. Knowledge of Work Health and Safety requirements when using tools and equipment in the child studies context will be developed.
