Course content

Introduction to business process re-engineering and workflow management: Trends in work and business management; suitable environments for workflow management.
Process modelling: Designing workflow and process models using Petri Nets and workflow specification languages; mapping Petri-Nets to workflow models; verification of the structural correctness of workflow process models.
Management of workflows: Consideration of temporal aspects and resources; data perspective and workflow-relevant data; managing the operation of workflows; transactional aspects; case handling.
Workflow management systems: Architecture and components of a WfMS; the Workflow Management Coalition standard; introduction to one real workflow system; workflow application design issues; relation to groupware and document management systems.
Reengineering: overall methodology for application reengineering; building web-based applications; design for distribution integration between legacy and new systems at data, user interface and application levels; model-driven software development
Software architectures and Middleware: comparison of software architectural principles; monolithic, component-oriented and distributed architectures; middleware; service-oriented architecture.
