Course aim

To introduce and develop the concepts, principles and the practice of object oriented program development using the C++ programming language. To provide an understanding of the theory and practice of using design patterns to facilitate the efficient creation of good software. To facilitate the writing of quality code by developing and encouraging the consistent use of coding standards, guidelines and best practices. To expose, equip and provide practice in a set of software development tools used in industry.

Course content

Introduction to C++. Object oriented programming in C++ (Classes and objects; Inheritance and polymorphism; Nested classes and friend classes; Exception handling; Stream I/O). Operator overloading. Big three methods (destructor, copy constructor and copy assignment operator). Pointers and pointer-based strings. Dynamic memory allocation and management. Standard template library. Templates. Cross platform compilation. Design patterns. Version control, debugging and testing tools. Coding standards and guidelines.
