Course aim

To provide understanding of the business-IT interface and its complexities.

Course content

  • Communication skills - presenting; report writing; some IT formal document structures; other formal communication skills; developing a CV; referencing.
  • Teamwork and collaborative work environments - team structures and organisation; effective teamwork; team roles; evaluation of team performance.
  • Professional ethics and social responsibility - the responsibilities of an IT professional; basic elements of ethical analysis; skills in ethical analysis; basic elements of social analysis.
  • Pervasive themes - user centeredness and advocacy; information assurance and security; IT system model.
  • Application domains - bio-informatics and medical applications; business applications; law enforcement; political processes; e-commerce; manufacturing; education; entertainment; agriculture etc.
  • Organisational context - business processes; IT environments; organisational structures.
  • Systems thinking - high level organisational business models; problem identification in an organisation; problem solving processes; business process models; workflow and workflow models.
  • Acquisition and sourcing - build or buy; in-sourcing or out-sourcing; system architectures; hardware, software and virtual; testing, evaluation and benchmarking; contracts and SLAs; quality.
  • Architecture - representations and modelling; information architecture; enterprise architecture; system architecture; enterprise integration applications (e.g. CRM, ERP)
  • Social context of computing - social informatics; social impact of computing on society; on-line communities and social implications; philosophical context; diversity issues; accessibility; globalisation issues; economic issues in computing; digital divide.
  • Tools and conceptual models - mind-mapping; Porters five forces; rich pictures etc.
