Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of civil engineering fluid flows, with particular application to incompressible flow and to turbulence. The main goal is to teach the student to address fluid flow problems in a systematic manner. This course will form a foundation on which later undergraduate water engineering courses will build.

Course content

  • Introduction to water flows in civil engineering
  • Properties of water
  • Hydrostatic forces
  • Conservation of mass
  • Conservation of energy
  • Conservation of momentum
  • Viscous flow
  • Boundary layers
  • Elements of the theory of turbulence
  • Closed conduit flow
  • Dimensional analysis and modelling
