Criminology 1

Course aim

To give students an introduction to the structure and operation of the criminal justice system in Australian society, an opportunity to consider and debate contemporary issues touching upon justice and law which are of particular interest to the community.

Course content

Defining the notion of justice, the definition of crime and the extent of crime and media reporting of it, psychological theories of crime, theories of policing and social control, police accountability, private security, punishment theory, penology and sentencing, an introduction to victimology, restorative justice and therapeutic jurisprudence, crime prevention perspectives in the justice debate, including evaluation of criminal justice initiatives, issues around Indigenous Australians and the criminal justice system, and prospects for the future.
