Course aim

This course aims to provide graduate students with the knowledge and skills to evaluate the strength and clinical utility of allied health research evidence and to become educated consumers of health sciences research to support lifelong learning.

Course content

Quantitative research designs (primary and secondary evidence), statistical processes relevant to quantitative research (validity, reliability, comparative statistics, correlation statistics, survey statistics), the theory and practice of constructing and conducting different types of research (including acquiring ethics approval, developing research questions/hypothesis generation, sampling frameworks, measurement theory, selecting appropriate statistical tests, interpretation of results, clinical utility of research, reporting of results), the hierarchy of quantitative research evidence, critical appraisal of research designs, structuring a search strategy around a clinical question, library database searching, establishing the strength of the body of evidence, writing and presenting a systematic review of the body of evidence for a topic in health practice.
