Course aim

This course will engender in students a new thinking paradigm for supply chain management and its place in the design and development of systems support solutions for highly complex defence systems.

Course content

The basic concepts and principles of supply chain management with a focus on operational excellence, supply chain integration and collaboration, and virtual supply chains will be outlined within the context of complex defence support systems. The issues of integration, coordination and collaboration across organizations and throughout the supply chain will be addressed using case studies.

Topics covered include: principles of Supply Chain Management; purchasing and procurement issues in supply chain management; creating and managing supplier relationships; strategic sourcing for successful Supply Chain Management; demand forecasting and collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment; aggregate planning and inventory management; enterprise resource planning systems; process management: just-in-time, risk and total quality management issues in supply chain management; storage and distribution management; customer relationship management; facility location decisions; service response logistics, incl. contracting for availability; supply chain process integration; performance measurement along the supply chain; measures of logistics and system support; maintenance and support logistics; logistics management.
