Course aim

To develop knowledge in archival principles, theory, models and practices; developing an understanding of the role of the archive in modern society with a focus on Australian and international best practice and the importance of the archive to the community.

Course content

The learning process will include a review of the historical development of archival principles and theory internationally and nationally; analysis of provenance, original order, accessioning and arrangement and description.  A review of national and international recordkeeping standards and principles and their application in the archival context; the value of records for memory; record keeping roles and responsibilities compared to those of the archivist; assessment of records and archival management models and how they relate to the digital environment; the challenges relating to the management and preservation of traditional format and digital materials; practical sessions relating to the management of archives and current issues in archival management and recordkeeping.
