To introduce students to the techniques and products associated with managing personal wealth and to highlight the principles involved in constructing investment portfolios.
The financial planning environment – industry participants, role, regulatory and licensing issues; role of the investment adviser – independence and ethical responsibilities; principles underlying the construction of personal investment portfolios – investor goals, attitudes to risk, time horizon and constraints; principal investment markets – property, equities, interest bearing securities, and use of gearing; formulation of an investment plan - wealth creation strategies, diversification, taxation and performance goals; superannuation – role, funding, issues, types of fund, lump sum versus pension retirement benefits and taxation considerations; personal risk management and insurance; performance measurement and review – evaluation of risk, performance record and prospects, direct versus indirect investment; estate planning – powers or attorney, death and taxes, wills, testamentary trusts.
