Course aim

To develop skills in the use of computer aided design and drawing (CADD) as a tool in visualising and communicating design intent of components and items to AS1100 using SolidWorks. To be able to translate solid models of an item into a physical artefact produced by a computer aided manufacturing (CAM) process that uses either CNC machining, laser cutting or 3D printing.

Course content

Visualisation of geometric shapes - orthographic projections; isometric views; techniques for solid modelling. Engineering drawing and dimensioning to AS1100 - abbreviations, drawing sheet layout; line types and text size; view placement; reference dimensions; tolerance accumulation; dimensioning rules; section views; and drawing revisions. Detailing welds and surface texture. Limits and fits and linear and geometric tolerancing. SolidWorks - basic (sketch, extrude and cut) and advanced modelling (patterns, equations, loft, sweep), creating assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, adding motion, photo rendering and animations. Computer Aided Manufacturing. Save a SolidWorks part as an .stl file for 3D printing and a .dxf file for laser cutting. View the use of a SolidWorks file to create CNC milled and turned parts. Create a CAD model of an item and transform it into a physical artefact using a CAM process.
