To provide students with an introductory understanding of migration, identity and multiculturalism in national and transnational contexts.
Students will develop intercultural perspectives through the study of social and cultural dimensions of globalisation, patterns of internal and transnational migration, voluntary and involuntary migration (sojourners, guest workers, immigrant settlers, short term and long term refugees), socio-political, interpretive and critical approaches to cultural adaptation. Students will develop knowledge of transitional, hybrid and border identities, societal outcomes of immigration (assimilation, separation, integration, marginalisation and hybridity), policy outcomes in settler countries (multiculturalism, education, welfare, security and citizenship), as well as human rights and international governance of migration.
