Course aim

To provide students with an introductory understanding of migration, identity and multiculturalism in national and transnational contexts.

Course content

Social and cultural dimensions of globalisation; patterns of internal and transnational migration; voluntary and involuntary migration (sojourners, guest workers, immigrant settlers, short term and long term refugees); socio-political, interpretive and critical approaches to cultural adaptation; transitional, hybrid and border identities; societal outcomes of immigration (assimilation, separation, integration, marginalisation and hybridity); policy outcomes in settler countries (multiculturalism, education, welfare, security and citizenship); human rights and international governance of migration.
